How we create legendary comfort

How do you turn wood, wire and fiber into a ‘oh-so-comfortable’ McRoskey mattress and box spring set prized by generations of loyal customers? By paying extraordinary attention to materials we use in our beds and to construction techniques carefully refined over the years. The result is a detailed level of workmanship not possible in mass production.

Over our 100-year history, we’ve perfected the process to add to your comfort and to the longevity of our products.
Here are just a few of the undercover secrets of the bed we’ll build for you:

The McRoskey Innerspring
At the heart of every McRoskey mattress is the steel innerspring unit — this is where true comfort begins. We form our own open-ended hourglass-shaped coils, then lace them together with helical wire in an alternating clockwise/counterclockwise pattern. This unique construction technique results in supple support with proven durability. After assembling this work of art, it’s heat treated to ensure ongoing performance.

Filling Matherials Generous Filling Materials
Comfort continues with the addition of layer upon layer of luxurious cotton, vibrant polyester, wool and natural rubber latex filling materials. Our mattresses are intentionally generously filled on both sides of the innerspring unit, because they're meant to be slept on both sides (which is why we recommend you flip and rotate your mattress four times a year). The additional benefit is comfort that lasts longer.
Sidewall Venting
Air vents, including a double row of brass eyelets in our CLASSIC and byDESIGN beds, surround the sidewalls of the mattress and the box spring. This allows the bed to "breathe" so you sleep cooler and more comfortably while materials inside stay fresh.

Filling Matherials Quality Ticking
Ticking is a strong, tightly woven fabric used to make mattress covers. At McRoskey, every cut edge is hemmed for added strength when seaming two panels together. Fabric strength is critical as it must withstand the rigors of our construction techniques and years of everyday use by our customers. We use smart looking, attractive patterns in all-cotton as well as knit blend weaves. We select materials for their breathability which along with sidewall venting ensures a cool, clean sleep.
The Importance of Tufting
Tufting, a time-tested mattress assembly technique, keeps our abundant layers of filling materials in place while making for a cushioned sleeping surface. Each tuft, an independent loop of twine that passes through the mattresses top and bottom surfaces, is pulled to a specific tension to help achieve your comfort choice: gentle, firm or extra firm. Our queen size mattress boasts more than 70 tufts!

Filling Matherials The Case for Box Springs
Correct support for your comfortable mattress starts with the McRoskey box spring. Built with heavy duty steel coils that are stapled to a sturdy wood slat frame and lightly upholstered with filling materials, it is then covered with matching ticking. Its purpose is to provide pressure-absorbing support that enhances the comfort and life of your mattress.
Strong Handles
Because we want you to flip and rotate your two-sided McRoskey mattress as well as rotate your box spring regularly,* we build strong, well fastened handles that allow you to move your set with ease. Handles that you can actually use are just one more of our many thoughtful construction features that make for complete comfort.

*Don't worry. We'll send you an email reminder when its time to flip or rotate!
